Reviews for One Monsoon in Mumbai

MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW (D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer)
One Monsoon in Mumbai presents Seema Rawat, cyberspy, who is, predictably, a nerd (less predictably) involved in a complicated romance and a spy mission. How does an Indian girl move from being a pickpocket to becoming a top cyberspy assigned to target the handsome Adhith Verma, son of India’s finance minister?

The first strength to note is that the sights, sounds, smells and feel of urban Indian streets comes to life through Anitha Perinchery’s observational descriptions: “She crouched on the road and squinted through the windows of the taxi at the office building, trying not to breathe in the exhaust fumes from the succession of vehicles cruising down the road. The heat radiating from the asphalt had her drenched in sweat within seconds. “Aey,” exclaimed the driver. “Are you crazy or what? You can’t sit on the street. Some poor fool will hit you and have his licence taken away. Get up, please. And gimme my money.” “In a minute,” Seema muttered. The crook she was supposed to be covertly investigating was at the entrance. If she paid now, the taxi would take off, leaving her exposed.”

Anyone who has visited or lived in India will breath in a deep breath of urban atmosphere upon reading this book, and will find familiar the cultural and social observations embedded in Seema’s world. One doesn’t expect comedy to emerge from such a crowded and embattled atmosphere, but irony is judiciously added into the mix to spice the story and bring Seema’s confrontations and conundrums to life.

Convoluted encounters evolve that lead overly protective auntie Madhu to join forces with the personality Seema is supposed to be covertly investigating. A terrorist attack on South Mumbai and Adhith’s showdown over Seema’s presence in the office adds to a rollicking, spicy, relentless roll of events and personalities. These surge through the streets of Mumbai and into the hearts of readers who will find Seema’s story compelling, action-packed, and hard to put down.

Perinchery doesn’t omit the complex family relationships that involve honor, pride, jealousy, and marital arrangements that affect child and parents in a complex series of perceptions and deceptions about choice and consequences: “What you think of as my forgetting where I came from was my unwillingness to take any more of my father’s taunts.”

Between its engrossing cultural and political inspections, the dilemma of a woman facing romantic prospects with two very different men, and a spy’s rocky career moves, One Monsoon in Mumbai isn’t about just one storm, but a series of confrontations steeped in Indian atmosphere, intrigue, and fun.

Readers looking for a romantic thriller that is more than a cut above the ordinary and who particularly enjoy stories set in India will appreciate the details and impact of this spy adventure. It’s a production that tickles the funny bone while adding intrigue and mystery to keep the conclusion unpredictable and engrossing.

Very highly recommended as a standout in Indian action fiction.

Honestly, I did not expect this book to be so good. The story is based in Mumbai and focuses on four people. An aunt and her niece and two best friends. With a plot set with infiltration, computers, love, lust and friendship, One Monsoon in Mumbai thrills and creates various degrees of emotion. The amount of research the author must have done to get all the small details is appreciable. The intricate love triangle or to be more precise, love quadrilateral shared between the four characters are intense as well as comical. The author also touches upon disgusting aspects that plague the country such as dirty politicians and child prostitution and this I believe will help generate a wider scale of awareness. The best part about this book is that every character has an individual story. The main novel is like a river with branched out stories as tributaries. I really enjoyed the book and I enjoyed communicating with the author who was constantly answering my doubts. She’s a sweet soul and I thank her for letting me review her book.

“One Monsoon in Mumbai” is a romantic comedy with a suspense background. Seema Rawat, the protagonist, is a cyberspy working for the Intelligence Bureau. Her mission is to unravel corruption on part of the Finance Minister who happens to be her boyfriend’s father.
Adhith Verma is an aspiring politician and the son of the Finance Minister. He is a graduate from IIT Mumbai and is well aware of his father’s schemes and his contribution to corruption. However, Adith wants to be a clean politician and make a difference.

The story is light-hearted and fun from the very beginning. The characters are funny, intelligent and will navigate you through the life of a spy. Situated in Mumbai, the story revolves around Seema Rawat, Adhith Verma and Vikram Joshi. It is a comprehensive plot that involves romance, careers and family troubles.

A gorgeous book with all that’s needed to keep it out of hand: romance, mystery, adventure, humor.
The characters are very clear sketched, with qualities and flaws that make them more real. The writer has talent and attention to detail that gives you the feeling that you are there now, not in your living room sofa, but it does not exaggerate to get you bored.
A story that begins with a very serious investigation to unveil a corrupt minister, continues with a very fine romantic story and ends with a series of unexpected events.
Thank you Anitha for trusting me with your work!!

Mythbreaker rated it it was amazingHave you ever picked up a book, thinking, “Another romcom? Ohkay.”
And then once you give it a try, you realize, “Nah…not just another romcom…”
One Monsoon in Mumbai is that book.
Synopsis:
Seema Rawat is an IB agent, who gets a job at a cybersecurity firm to collect evidence against a corrupt politician. In order to achieve this, she has to woo her boss, the very dashing and charming, Adhith Verma, son of the said politician.
Things would have gone just as she and her team had carefully chalked out but alas! Standing in her way is the not-as-handsome-but-still-hot-enough best friend of Adhith aka Vikram, who also happens to be a gifted ethical hacker, and one who would do anything in his power to protect his best friend!
Sparks fly in all directions, love blossoms at unlikely places, and tension and humour are built up hand in hand, as each one of their past lives come to the fore along with their secrets. What happens next? Whom or what does Seema choose? Or is there more than what meets the eye? Read the book to find out…
What I liked:
I am usually very, very nitpicky when it comes to romcoms these days. The reason being, nowadays, this genre is mostly about love n cheesy sex, rather than language and plot, not to mention character development. In light of that, One Monsoon in Mumbai comes as a surprise.
The language is impeccable, packed with some solid wit. The climactic scene left me in awe of the writer’s skill to intertwine tension and humour so masterfully.
What took me in for a surprise is that, this isn’t just another lovestory, but a little bit of everything. There is romance, angst, heartbreak, comedy along with images of harsh social issues which are woven in via backstories for each important character, adding depth and layers to the plot. I wouldnt be surprised if the author chooses to go for more literary ventures in the future, coz she has the talent.
Moreover, this is one of those books that have immense potential for a screen adaptation.
What I didnt like:
There’s nothing much to dislike as such, except that the story comes to an end at one point.
Verdict:
If you are looking for a romcom with substance and solid language, this is just the book for you. It will leave you with a warm smile in the end.
5 stars from my side.

Preeti Gopal rated it it was amazingFor a while I had been on the lookout for a good Indian story. I found one with One monsoon in Mumbai.
I love the fact that it is based in India, it’s racy and a page turner and incredibly romantic.
Ocassionaly cheesy but then Romance as a genre is.
What I find amazing though is that there is a good story here that is funny and thrilling at the same time.
I don’t want to seem sexist but you need to have a female author to weave romance so deftly into a thriller, that it actually looks like a beautiful piece of art.
The language is proverbial spice of this Biryani.

I don’t read much of romance genre but I tried this to get out of my comfort zone. And I wasn’t disappointed. This book was really easy to read which made it impossible to put down.
I loved how the book paced, the build up part equally interesting as the climax.
Seema Rawat, such a strong character. The world needs more like her!
The romantic angle. Loved how it evolved. You could feel it since their first encounter.
The backstories! One of the best things I liked about this book. It would give you great insight about the characters and their behaviors.
Thrillers? Who doesn’t love them? I was hooked on to the end.
Though I felt that the book was a bit too dramatic at some points for me, and the ending felt a little rushed, but it was overall a great read. Would recommend it to people who love romantic-thrillers. 3.5/5.
