One Monsoon in Mumbai

“The first strength to note is that the sights, sounds, smells and feel of urban Indian streets comes to life through Anitha Perinchery’s observational descriptions… It’s a production that tickles the funny bone while adding intrigue and mystery to keep the conclusion unpredictable and engrossing… Very highly recommended as a standout in Indian action fiction.” – MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW (D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer)

MEET THE CHARACTERS:

ADHITH VERMA, a.k.a. The Fashion Plate

28, Male
Assistant Manager
Imperium Technologies, Mumbai

This is my best friend, Adhith. Little piece of shit is everything I’m not. Handsome, charming, well-dressed. Plus, his father is India’s finance minister. So why does he need my help? Er… there’s this chick, Seema. Adhith’s girlfriend. I… er… like her. I think she likes me, too. If Adhith finds someone else… you get the point. But he… dammit, why is everything going to hell all at once? Did I tell you I just found a hacker in our system?
Signed, Vikram

VIKRAM JOSHI, a.k.a The Grouch

28, Male
Cybersecurity prodigy
Imperium Technologies, Mumbai

This is my best friend, Vikram. Is he cute? Uhh… you decide. Does he have a nice personality? Hell, no. He is rich but won’t spend a penny unless you put a gun to his head. So why would you swipe right? Please, for my sake. I need him and Seema to stop slobbering over each other. I want her to be my wife, dammit! Marrying that foul-mouthed former urchin is the only way I can stop my father from pushing me into politics.
Signed, Adhith

SEEMA RAWAT, a.k.a The Spy

24, Female
Cybersecurity Analyst
Intelligence Bureau, Mumbai division (on assignment at Imperium Technologies)

I seem to have acquired two fiancés—the suspect and his BFF. I would like to keep one of them… sigh… no. If Vikram figures out I hacked into Imperium’s systems to get his buddy for corruption… can’t take the risk. Anyway, I’m looking for someone to console myself with. Not cool with guns and handcuffs? You know which way to swipe.
Signed, Seema

MEET THE PARENTS:

“Why?” you may ask. Ha! You have to imagine that with the world’s best eye roll. The characters may inhabit the pages of a romcom, but they live in India, peeps. Neither romance nor comedy can happen without forcibly expressed opinions from parents, grandparents, siblings, assorted aunts and uncles, cousins, the teacher who taught you your numbers and letters, neighbours, their cows and cats and dogs and ducks, the taxi driver who once drove your great-grandfather to his second cousin’s funeral, the maids working for the various households in the social circle, etc. etc. Even if all of them miraculously agree the couple would be a perfect match, even if the heavens shower blessings, there will be some distant uncle from some distant village who objects vociferously and stalks out of the wedding ceremonies, vowing never to speak to the bride’s/groom’s parents ever again.

So let’s at least see what the immediate family thinks of their children’s marital prospects.

SEE WHERE THEY HANG OUT:

C

COLABA – Adhith’s bachelor pad, CUFFE PARADE – where Vikram tries to save money by crashing in his boyhood room, KURLA – where Seema shares a flat with her friend, NARIMAN POINT- where they all work, GATEWAY OF INDIA – where the romance happens, THE OBEROI HOTEL – where none of the three main characters will ever be allowed back (read the book to find out why 🙂 ), GRANT ROAD – the slums where Seema used to live, PANVEL – where Seema’s auntie lives.
